What You Need to Know

The Hillside Public Library does NOT do court-mandated service hours under any circumstances, no exceptions.

General guidelines to know and follow
  • Volunteering will be on an individual, as-needed basis, for both library and volunteer. In-person volunteering will be scheduled – no drop-in unless stated.
  • You must act respectfully and be considerate of all patrons, staff, and community members. As a volunteer, you are a representative of the library within the library and at off-site events.
  • All other library policies remain in place and must be followed as well.
  • You are responsible for keeping track of your service hours when you sign-in and sign-out with the librarian during your shifts. Please bring your own school forms to have the librarian sign off on them. We will print out forms for you if it is possible.
  • If you have completed your hours or need to stop participating at any time, please notify us.

Any of these rules are subject to change and update.

Communication

All communication will be done through email. Please check your email regularly for updates, available shifts, and special opportunities. If your email changes, please let us know as soon as possible.

If you can’t make it

If you are unable to make your shift due to being sick, or have an emergency, please call 708.449.7510 ext. 117 as soon as possible.

If you are running late, please notify us. Attendance and punctuality are important, and we are counting on you to arrive for your scheduled shift(s).

Failure to notify us three times will result in your dismissal as a volunteer.

Dress Code

Dress appropriately for a public library (think similar to a school dress code). Shorts are OK, but please avoid open-toed shoes for safety reasons. The library’s temperature may vary, so bringing a sweater or jacket is recommended.

Cellphone Use

Please do not use cellphones or other technology for calls or texting during your shift unless otherwise permitted.
