Mobile Hotspots

The Hillside Public Library is now offering mobile hotspots for checkout to Hillside Public Library cardholders. The mobile hotspots are small, portable devices that provides free, unlimited wireless internet access anywhere you get a cellphone signal.

Hotspot lending policy

  1. Hotspots may be borrowed by Hillside Library card holders ages 18 and older in good standing. ONE HOTSPOT PER HOUSEHOLD.
  2. The loan period is twenty-one (21) days. No renewals. Non-holdable. Must wait 24 hours before checking another hotspot out.
  3. A cash deposit of $20 will be collected at time of checkout.
  4. Hotspots must be returned in person with all parts including the bag. Use of the bookdrops, either outdoor or indoor, will result in the loss of the deposit. Deposit will be returned if the hotspot is returned in complete working order.
  5. Fines for unreturned hotspots are $2.00 per day. An “on time” return is defined as a hotspot returned prior to closing on the seventh day. Fines will be deducted from cash deposit.
  6. The borrower assumes full responsibility for the cost of repair or replacement in the event that the hotspot is lost, stolen or damaged. Missing parts will result in the following deduction from the deposit.
    1. Missing hotspot $100.00
    2. Missing USB cable $15.00
    3. Missing bag $ 5.00
    4. Missing instruction card $ 3.00

If the hotspot is not returned, its wireless service will be disconnected. The hotspot will be unusable, the deposit will be forfeited and the borrower will be charged for the cost of replacement.

Hotspot Instructions

How to turn on the hotspot
Press and hold the power button until Welcome appears on the screen. The hotspot can take up to a minute to establish a connection. When the hotspot is ready to use, signal strength bars and the letters LTE will appear on the screen. Similar to a cell phone, you will get a strong or weak signal depending on the location of the device. Your coverage may be affected by obstructions (e.g., building walls and doors, terrain and foliage, weather and atmospheric conditions, and other factors.)

Connecting your device to the hotspot
Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on your device. Go to your list of available wireless networks and select the network name Hillside Hotspot 01 (or 02, 03, etc.). Enter the hotspot password the appears on the hotspot packaging. Up to 10 devices can be connected to the hotspot at a time, but keep in mind that the speed and battery life decreases as more devices are added.

Charging the hotspot
Insert the small end of the USB charging cable into the micro-USB charging port on the right side of the hotspot and plug the charging adapter into a standard AC power outlet. Do not overcharge! Leaving the charger plugged in can significantly decrease the life of the battery. Unplug the hotspot when the power button changes from red to green. A fully charged hotspot should last approximately 8-10 hours.

How to turn off the hotspot
Press and hold the power button until Goodbye appears on the screen.
